Hmm, this is pretty much nearly 98% fact! Well almost. It is based on a combination of three weddings. Let's just say the cucumber story comes from my brother in law's friends, we found them whilst decorating my sister's room with confetti. The last minute bra shop was a true story too. I very much made the day of two of my friends boyfriends who took me to Victoria Secrets, apparently they weren't usually allowed inside. And lastly, very recently I made a mad dash to a very good friend of mine's wedding. I was doing a reading and about 20 minutes before the ceremony could be seen running down Islington high street with heels in hand waving at taxis. I literally walked into the wedding ceremony moments before the bride, and having lost half of my body weight in sweat. (Apologies again to that particular bride and groom for my lateness).

Now this bit has elements of fiction. I have stayed up drinking a bit to late after rehearsal dinners the night before the wedding, I have eaten too much food. Yet again maybe my imagination is kicking in, but this again is pretty much all fiction. Thankfully I've never had a late night heart to heart with an ex after they've been married - I don't envy Millie with that one. I've also never received interflora flowers from a stranger, that one perhaps I'll jealous of!
Hmm now this one, part one of the rehearsal day is actually all fiction. The only elements of fact are the descriptions of the inside of the wedding reception and the church which are based on a wedding I went to in the US once.
The only bit which lies a little bit in the fact is that feeling when you wake up and don't entirely remember what happened the night before! Hmm there is quite a bit of fact in this chapter. I love going on hen do's and I've been a bridesmaid a few times so I've had a lot of experience planning them too. All of the props purchased for Kristen's bachelorette party are items used on one of my friends hen dos. The bun pincher went down especially well, except as Millie found out it doesn't work well for actually pinching bums and instead we used it as a ball/boob pincher. The decision dice were also a particular favourite of mine, and led to some amusing situations.
The scene where Millie trips and rips her skirt is based on an incident that happened to me in Thailand. I was dancing on a table on the beach one night and i tripped off it and stood on my skirt. It had a clean rip all the way from the hem of the skirt to my bum and as the skirt was tightish it was leaving me pretty exposed. Luckily I was travelling at the time with a guy who kindly lent me his t'shirt to have round my waist. The character of James is slightly based in truth. I was at a roof bar in New York on a hen do and I saw a cute guy and when I started talking to him it turned out he was English. The handcuffing incidents are based slightly on my sister's hen do in Spain, although the kidnapping of a man is definitely fiction! Not a lot happens in this chapter, so not too much fact of fiction. What I will say as the spreadsheet idea came from a very good friend of mine who had a friend who went on a hen do with equally as bad spreadsheets used. Her rendition of the story made me giggle and we both thought it would be just the kind of thing Collette would do.
In terms of the party city experience I spent many a happy hour with planning a bacherloette party there. And all of the accessories we purchased for a poor bride to be. The decision dice came in very handy, and I put the bun pincher to good use. That will be evident in the tales o Just a quick fact or fiction this time, as there aren't too many revelations this chapter. I did once go on a date with a guy who lived in a bean. But it didn't get to the bedroom stage so no booty call with that one.
My very lovely roommate in college and her family did let me go and stay with me lots and they did take me out on parents weekend, and have me over during the holidays. Which I was very grateful for, as without them I would have been really home sick. Soho Bloomingdales is worth going to. In fact generally there are loads of great shops down that part of Manhattan which are much quieter than the more touristy areas around Macy's and 5th Avenue. Hmm now then firstly I have never been pregnant, so that story is entirely fictional. I'm going to have to do a bit of research on that topic for some later chapters. I also have never been to Tiffany's. I know you are all thinking I have got the wrong location for it too, but they do have a branch in Wall Street, and I think it is more likely for the characters that they would have used that one.
Actually thinking about this chapter there isn't a lot of fact. The hangovers are totally all mine though, puking up in toilets usually follow when i have had one too many cocktails. The other thing that did happen to me was the bridesmaid dress being the wrong size. I arrived in the US and tried on my bridesmaid dress a week before the wedding. I had seperate top and skirt, and the top was a size too big and it fell down very dramatically. We took it to the tailors but they couldn't do anything with it as it was boned. The top had also been discontinued. We were really lucky that we got a new one the next size down fed-exed to us two days before the wedding from Tennessee. But that wasn't the last of the top dramas, look out for later in the book for that one! No Millie is not based on me. I'd see why you think it, I spent a year at an American university, I have been a bridesmaid at an American wedding and I did once receive a save the date fridge magnet in the post. But honestly Millie isn't like me at all.
I actually spent a wonderful year at a small American univeristy and loved it. I made a couple of close friends there, and unlike Millie and Kristen, we keep in pretty close contact. I have attended both of their lovely weddings which gave me the idea for the book. Yet I should stress at this point I have not slept with either of the grooms! That bit is pure fiction. I also never had to even think twice about attending their weddings as I didn't have any skeletons lurking in my closet like Millie has. In fact I don't think I could have booked my plane ticket fast enough! Amber owes a lot of characterisation to one of my friends who gave a brilliant impression of her housemate at a recent dinner party. She won't be making too much of an appearence in the book as she stays in the UK. Which is a shame as she was beginning to seem like a nice character. But I felt that Millie needed another character to introduce her aganst about going to the wedding. |
