Same same but different - Khao San Road

Well I made it safe and sound to Bangkok. I’ve arrived in what feels like another world to my guest house in Khao San Road. I’ve never seen anything quite like it in my life.  I think I was prepared for it to feel alien, but it is not like I’d imagined at all. It’s like being at a hustley bustley market, yet in sweltering heat with all the shopkeepers shouting at you every where you go. Every time I pick anything up they keep showing me other things and muttering “same same but different”. But it is more western than I expected, there’s even a Boots! Which was ace as I realised I hadn’t forgotten my make up!

There are also loads of people. Well not people, but backpackers. You walk along the street and you might as well be in London. It’s a bit weird though as it is making me feel really lonely. Everyone seems to be travelling with someone, or seem to bump into people they know as they walk down the street. Just how long have these people been here?? And how do they meet each other. I thought loads of people travelled alone, but since I’ve got here I haven’t seen many people on their own at all. I’m usually quite content with my own company (which is a good thing the amount of hours I put in at work after most people go home). Maybe it’s the jetlag talking. I can’t be homesick I’ve been here less than 24 hours. And plus, this place seems fab I just need to find some people to enjoy it with.

Well tomorrow I’m going to go and sightsee outside of the Khao San Road. It took me a good 4 hours this morning to coax myself out of the room, but tomorrow I think I will be brave enough to explore on my own.

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.
